Three skiers rescued from high Sierra trail

Quote:
Three men were rescued Wednesday in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks after they were reported overdue from their Sierra cross-country skiing trip.

The skiers, who were on the trans-Sierra trail along the Shepherd Pass to Wolverton route, were scheduled to end their trip Monday but were reported overdue Tuesday, said Adrienne Freeman, spokeswoman for the parks.

The trail, which starts near Independence and runs to Wolverton, is commonly known as the High Route.

A National Park Service helicopter crew picked up the skiers about 11 a.m. Wednesday, she said. The 4 feet of snow that fell Sunday night in the area likely played a factor in the skiers being overdue, she said.
