The fire permit regulations bring up the question: Do you need a fire permit if you are only using a stove, and not building a camp fire?
I don't think you do, but someone might like to clarify and confirm this.
From the permit page:
You must have a California Campfire Permit to use a stove, lantern, or campfire outside a developed campground or recreation area.
