Just a day use! Jay, people can't transfer their permits, but you
could join someone's group. But that usually doesn't happen due to the difficulty of getting together, hiking together, etc. If someone does reply here or contact you, then that would work.
However, getting a walk-in permit for a Tuesday day hike is pretty easy. Check the
Unused Whitney Permits numbers for previous years, and you can see mid-week there are nearly always permits available. The are made available at 11am at the Visitor Center (just S of Lone Pine) the day before your hike. For more details, check the Wilderness Permit Options (link to the left), especially Steps 5 and 6.
You can also keep checking the Recreation.gov site for
Day Use Mt Whitney permits. There will likely be some cancellations coming available in the two weeks prior to your hike.
