Absolutely! Got a lottery day permit in '09, but was able to trade it in for a different day once I got to Lone Pine. Got skunked in the lottery last year, but traveled the 2000 miles anyway, confident I would get two overnight permits somewhere during my target week. It worked out just fine. Being flexible by a day or two around your desired date can make a big difference.
