I'm planning a 3 day trip into the Bishop Pass area for 4th of July weekend, but the above average snowfall may have the trail still buried that weekend. I was searching for options and discovered Jennie Lakes Wilderness. Does anybody have first hand experience on that trail? How is the fishing? According to guide books permits are not required on the trail.

I day hiked into Jenny Lake once, and went off-trail to Weaver Lake via Shell Mountain. Until you posted, I didn't realize it is not in the National Park. I'd call and ask about permits:

When I hiked there, I thought Jenny Lk would make a fine camping site. Nice lake, nobody there. Weaver lake was more populated, with people swimming and playing in the water. I doubt fish are planted, so fishing could be sparse.

I was thinking of going into the Jennie Lakes Wilderness next week, but it's a no-go. The ranger station said the trailhead access is closed due to snow. It was suggested that I call again in about a month.

Uhhhh, I spoke to the trail maintenance crew for the area in person....yesterday. The area is still in winter snow, and the roads are not clear to the trailheads.

My group does the trail maintenance in the area each year, and we were scheduled to go in next week.....cancelled to July 6-10, and even that is in question, depending on the melt.

By the way, a great area. Fairly heavily used, as there are only a few "destinations", Weaver and Jennie Lakes. Access to some other great places, for longer trips.

I went the 2nd week of July Last year. snow had recently melted off at the lake 7-10 days prior according to the ranger. Hiked from Stoney Creek trail head, up Poop Out Pass, then to Jennie Lakes for 3 nights. Started as a defined trail then switched to rock carions and blazes on the trees (we didn't know this at the beginning). There are some nice camp sites on the far West side of the lake away from the trail heads. From jennie Lakes there are a number of opportuities to explore. Scenery and solitude during the weekdays, camped Sunday-Tues. Bring Plenty of Deet/Mosquito repelant, head net! A self issue permit/sign in at the trail head makes this wilderness a no hassle alternative when in the Sequoia. If pack in a shovel campfires are allowed. Overall this area is a worth a visit. There are many YouTube videos of Jennie and Weaver Lake. Good Luck ST
